Hi,
i am setting up a home lab and i have a funny behavior i want to ask if someone knows how do deal with.
I have an Asus X79 Pro motherboard with an onboard SATA controller that i would like to passthrough to a storage appliance installed in a VM in the same host; the storage appliance r VM esides on a disk on a PCI SATA controller and the ESXi boots from USB. (vsphere 5.1 update 1)
I thought with this setup i would have no problems because the VM i have to assign the device to is on a dedicated separate controller, but when i passthrough the device and i reboot then i don't see ANY controller in ESXi anymore and all VMs are inaccessible (including the storage appliance)
I read somewhere that passingthrough an onboard controller is not supported, anyone knows why this happens and if i am doing something wrong? Do i have to give up this idea?
I found a blog post that describes the same mobo on vSphere 5 and shows the passthrough options i get:
